It does not imply any continuity with respect to Budokai Tenkaichi 3 (in fact, Dimps regains the baton as developers) and also the experienced player in previous installments must be prepared to bite the dust in a nice way. The first thing to make clear is that we are facing a title completely different from any other. Nothing is further from the truth, everything has to be said. “The kame hame has definitive”, as they tried to sell it to us.

Especially when it comes to the farewell to the saga on Playstation 2 and in full commemoration of its 25th anniversary since Gokuh appeared in the mythical Japanese weekly Shonen Jump (# 54,1984). When we came across the announcement of Dragon Ball Z: Infinite World at Leizpig’s last (and last for now) Games Convention, many of us couldn’t contain the excitement. Not surprisingly, many of those behind its conception made first steps and shared glory in companies like Capcom, SNK or Human. With each new chapter, more and more characters came together to form a roster never seen in any fighting game, polishing control and occasionally playing with somewhat more role-playing elements. ĭeveloped by Dimps (Budokai saga) and Spike (Tenkaichi Budokai) for the current Namco / Bandai over six years, each of the installments managed to capture the true essence of the original combat with almost all the power of its animated version. Games like Hyper Dimension (SNES) or Advance Adventure (GBA) came to represent a needed exception, endowing the franchise with enormous qualitative doses, but we will agree that the true coming of age was reached thanks to the titles developed for 128 bits.

With the latter it always gave the sensation of finding us totally wasted products, whose fate could have been quite different if they had not been starred by that plethora of charismatic characters, recipients of absolute fervor on the part of the stands. Gone are dozens of titles with a bit of this and another of that, from RPGs based on the use of letters to interactive OVAs (Original Video Animation), passing –of course– by a large handful of forgettable and opportunistic One VS One.

Because we all know by now that Toriyama’s original epic, far from being considered a work of art and essay, brings together concepts and premises that are far from being fully exploited by the video game industry. And probably, despite all the technical and logical advances that lie ahead in the future, there is still a long way to go to achieve that dream. Let’s start with something very obvious: the perfect Dragon Ball game doesn’t exist yet.
